As we Catholic wear ashes today marks the first
day, or the start of the season of Lent, which begins 40 days prior to
Easter. Lent is a time when many Christians prepare for Easter by
observing a period of fasting, repentance, moderation & spiritual
discipline.
At Mass, congregants come forward to have a small cross
marked on their forehead in ash, an outward sign of inward reflection.
"In olden
days, the phrase the priests used was 'remember that you are dust and
to dust you will return... but the phrase we use today is 'turn away
from sin and be faithful to the Gospel."
Catholic devotee from the Philippines, a time to observe - that no meat shall be eaten during Ash Wednesday and Good Friday as part of the period of fasting, churches from all over the country is open to all devotees to confess sins to the priest and ask for forgiveness to the Lord.
